Playground Equipment, Florah Magabe and local government involvement:

a vacant fieldStill just a glimmer of an idea right now but we’ve had some interesting news from Ms. Magabe regarding expansion of the training centres for vulnerable youth, single mothers and disabled people. She has been in contact with several lake zone Regional Commisioners regarding new space (see photo of possible site) for training centres and has lots of positive responses. This will mean not only training for many people but jobs for craftspeople of all trades and we’ll be there to provide the tools. As you can see the job’s a big one and we look forward to hearing more about the project and ways we can help her succeed.

Playground equipment:

The playground equipment we funded and provided tools and training for the construction of, has been installed and seems to be a hit with the kids. The teachers will be struggling to get them back in the classroom.

News on the Container:

A container full to the brim with toolsOur container is scheduled to depart next month with 17 tonnes of tools destined to be distributed to rural artisans throughout the Lake Zone. It will be our 16th container and we just barely scratch the surface of the need. There are 180 sewing machines, over 500 carpenter’s chisels, Power tools for more urban areas and some unusual donations as well. We are lucky enough to have three wood lathes, two bench saws and a massive workbench which will certainly come in handy in our Mwanza workshop. On top of that there are two large industrial sewing machine benches and and masses of small hand tools. Many, many thanks to everyone who provided these amazing tools. We simply can’t do this without your generous support.

Social history hidden in plain sight:

Hand Planes in a rowOne of our volunteers, John Pitman, has a request. He collects antique hand planes and is writing a book about what he’s discovered by way of the social importance of these interesting little bits of wood and steel. He’d like anyone with an old, wooden plane of any type to donate them for him to examine. Although all donations are valuable and appreciated, some can be quite interesting historically.
